Camera Work

Typically in the Indie genre, there tends to be a lot of close up shots. Close up shots tend to leave imprints of the artists face, and their look in the audience's mind, making it easier to remember them. If an audience can remember the artists face, then it means they'll find it more easier to recognize them, and perhaps develop an interest in them as they have started to build a connection with the artist.

There are also  many tracking shots of the artists performing, perhaps this may be to give a teaser of what it would be like to see the artist;s live at their concerts and events.

MISE-EN-SCENE

Wide shots are also typically used to show the setting and also show the audience the outfits of the artists. This is extremely important as the artists are style icons for the audience, and so the audience need to be able to build a rapport with them, and with social media nowadays, costume is very vital for an artists. Also being able to see the setting strengthens the meaning behind the video.

Especially in Indie music videos, the locations are fairly simple.  They do not have a massive budget, since they are independent artists and are not mainstream. They have their locations in accessible places which are relatively cheap, such as clubs which have natural lighting instead of havng to pay for artificial light. However they may use studios which have a coloured backdrop which gives off some colour.

Dark settings are typically used, however this is not always the case, but it gives off a mysterious sense, keeping the audience engaged and immeresed in the video. Also because there is a dark setting it makes the editing look more seamless and smooth as if it is not changing much at all.

Props are as important in the indie genre. Instruments are mainly used as props, and we tend to see a few shots of them. It is a way to showcase the artist's talent as it adds some credibility to their image.

In terms of costume, the indie genre doens't tend to promote the type of clothing you may find in the hip-hop genre which shows off the artists wealth. They typically wear casual clothes as costumes. It promotes a laid back attitude and the fact that they are more for the music rather than what they are wearing, which may attract more audience, and audience can feel relatable to them as a artist rather than what they wear.

Editing

Editing is mostly dominated by fast paced cuts, keeping the audience enganged in the music video as they are constantly being shown different images.

Depending on whether the song is sad or happy, there are a vartiey of shots to keep up with the tempo. From time to time there is on the beat editing. This follows Andrews Goodwin's theory of the music having a direct correlation with the visuals, making it easier to illustrate what they are trying to transmit in the video.

Effects are often added to the videos to give them as unique feel, such as this girl flying in space. It makes it more aesthetically pleasing to the audience, and also highlights the new advances to technology which are crucial to the music industry.
