Lady Gaga - Poker Face - Performance

Relationship between Music and Visuals

Poker Face has a fast paced tempo/beat and this is enhanced through the use of the editing. It is clear that the editing keeps up with the beat, by using a lot of fast cuts and occassionally some disorientating shots to match some of the synthesizers used in the beat. This is a very upbeat song and the use of flashing artifical lighting reflects the music. Smoke is also used to reflect a certain spooky aspect of the melody.

Smoke representing sinister element of song.

All movements are in relation to the beat. Everything is fast paced indicating this close relationship between the music and visuals which is a fun, uplifting mood.

Voyeurism

This is one of Lady Gaga's first biggest worldwide songs as a pop star. Because of this she has to sell her image, and this ties into Andrew Goodwin's theory of the Star Image. There are many close up shots of Gaga's face  There are of her with men and this is purposely put in to show her voluptuousness and her seductiveness. During the video Lady Gaga wears revealing clothes e.g Off shoulder leotard, tight leather trousers etc. She also has a topless man possibly to appeal to the female audience. However at the beginning of the song, there is an establishing shot of Lady Gaga coming out of water and close up shots reflecting the male gaze, and this is to attract male audiences also. Water is dripping down her body and the camera pans down her body, also reflecting the male gaze.

Camera Shots, Angles & Movement

  • There are many close ups of Lady Gaga in this video. Close ups are used as a way of keeping the artist the prevelant during the whole video. It is also used psychologicaly as it is a way of always remembering the arists face.

  • There are also quite a lot of wide shots, which gives the artist the space to perform their dance routins as seen in the Poker Face video. The wide shots are also used to establish the location and where the artist is, and poker is usually played in rich locations, and during the wide shots you can see a mansion behind the Lady Gaga and the dancers.

  • The camera zooms in from wide shots to reinforce that the sole purpose of the music video is to focus on the artist and this happens several times.

Link betwen lyrics and visuals

In the music video 'Moves Like Jagger' whilst they are saying the lyrics 'moves like jagger' we are clearly reminded who Mick Jagger was by the visuals. Mick Jagger is constantly shown throughout the video dancing and the band, Maroon 5 copying his dance moves, also reinforcing the lyrics.

MAROON 5 - MOVES LIKE JAGGER

ONE DIRECTION - WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL

One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' video shows a clear correlation between the lyrics and the visuals. At this point the lyric is "The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed" and we see through the visuals a girl flipping her hair.

Overall, there is usually some link between the lyrics and the visuals. It helps the audience remember the lyrics as they can see it visually. It makes the person remember the song.

Link between Music and Visuals

MAROON 5 - MOVES LIKE JAGGER

Lots of rapid cuts in Moves Like Jagger used to intersperse images of the main singer and other images such as showing Mick Jagger. It is edited in time to the beat. It is this way as it suits the theme of the song, and has this upbeat feel to it.

In TroubleMaker these three shots are put together to the beat, in time with the music. This gives the video a groovy feel and more aesthetically pleasing to watch.

'Congrats on the face'

'Adam Levine looking fine as always'

'Im baffled as to how this man looks 10 yet 40 at the same time'

There are often close ups of the artist or band in pop videos. This is typically seen in the pop genre as it comes down to the 'star image' and the record lablel would like the artist or band to be shown throughout the video. They want to keep the artist's face relevant so they can be easily remembered.
